Adding “please” usually makes a request sound softer. It is also useful to speak calmly and look at the person you are talking to.

It is important to explain the problem clearly. Instead of saying, “I need help,” a person can give a little more information. For example, a customer might say, “Excuse me, I cannot find the batteries. Could you show me where they are?” Clear requests save time because the other person understands what is needed.

People should also remember that someone may be busy or unable to help. If this happens, it is better not to become angry. A polite response such as “No problem” or “Thank you anyway” keeps the conversation friendly. The person can then ask someone else.

After receiving help, it is good to say thank you. A short “Thank you very much” or “That was very helpful” is often enough. Showing thanks tells the other person that their time and effort were appreciated.

Polite requests do not need to be long or formal. Simple words, a calm voice, and a clear explanation usually work well. Learning a few useful phrases can make it easier to ask for help in many everyday situations.
